Robert Cox on Critical Theory

The above is the most satisfying explanation that I have read on what differentiates theory from ideology.

Cox then goes on to speak of two purposes of theory:

  1. Problem Solving Theory — aim is to solve problems within the existing order. Not to question it.
  2. Critical Theory — aim is to question the premise/order

The following exposition of critical theory as one concerned about making available feasible alternatives with an eye to ‘historical processes’ is very important. Critical theory is not just about deconstructing but also about constructing:
